BIOTA carried out field visits to:
- Gather local knowledge and evaluate attitudes towards the lesser blind mole-rat population.
- Collect soil samples from active molehills.
- Evaluate the presence or absence of the species at suitable locations surrounding confirmed sightings.
- Develop species-specific primers with potential for amplifying environmental DNA (eDNA) as means of detecting the lesser blind mole rat in a non-invasive and cost-effective way.
- Identify important conservation actions.
- A full report will be uploaded to our project page with the details of this surveys. Below are some details and images of field visits in April 2024.

Finding the mole rat
After several unsuccessful attempts to find this elusive species, a friendly local family discovered a lesser blind mole rat for BIOTA to collect a sample of fur from. This sample is currently being analysed along with soil samples from the location the mole was found to test the validity of this eDNA method.
