We make all our trees available on the database which means you can scrape it to check for doubles.*

*please note that when people plant trees together, such as a couple's membership, the trees will show up twice in the database so they show up in each individual's account.

Open Tree Database

When you plant trees with Mossy Earth we assign you to the trees in our database. This means that we assign the unique photo and GPS coordinate of a tree to a unique ID for each customer. Depending on the time of the year there can either be a delay of a few months followed by planting and delivery or we might assign trees from a batch we planted a few months prior.

If the tree is already planted why are you paying for it?
The reason for the timing is that we prefer to plant our trees in large quantities during the best weather window at each project in order to increase efficiency and survival rates. To guarantee additionality (that your payment contributed to plant a tree that would otherwise not be planted) we finish allocating each batch before moving on to the next one. Thus if you don't purchase that specific tree we would wait until someone else decides to do so. No trees left behind!

Project Updates

A big part of our work is keeping our members updated on all the project developments. Our main form of comunication is a weekly email which includes on the ground videos, progress reports, tree photos, low impact living guides, camera traps, project votes and rewilding outcomes.

We also post updates on our social channels and group chats. This includes the Facebook Group and the Slack Channel. Members are invited to join these when they sign up.

Monthly Podcast

Long form podcasts allow us to properly express our point of view on a variety of subjects. We post these podcasts every month. All members can submit questions for us to answer in depth. From time to time we also bring in guests that can provide interesting points of view on topics such as conservation, rewilding and the climate crisis.

Our team is remote so we usually record the podcast over a video call. When we are together on the ground we try to record something on a cool location.

We are just getting started but you can check out the podcasts we have released to date on our YouTube channel.

Chat, Email or Call

We think "in person" contact is very important. This is why we invite all our members to book a 30-minute call with us to answer any questions or simply to chat about the projects and how we work.

We make this feature available to non-members as well should you have a lot of unsanswered questions before deciding to sign up. However, be sure to check the FAQs and the rest of the website, the answer to your question might already be there!

We also have the Slack channel and the Facebook group where members can share ideas and chat with the team as well.

FAQs

FAQs

How can I be sure you are planting my trees?

Transparency is paramount to us and we go to great lengths to ensure that you are able to evaluate our work:
  • Every tree planted is photographed and it's GPS coordinates are taken. This data is available in a public database for you to verify.
  • We report the number of trees planted by our members each month which you can cross-reference with the database.
  • We report the number of trees planted in each area and each sub-section of our projects allowing you to visit and evaluate the projects in person.
  • As a member you can contact and chat with the team to answer any questions you might have.
In addition to this we are working on some additional measure we hope to launch in due time such as live-streaming planting, 360 degree photos and aerial imagery.

Is Mossy Earth a charity?

We are a social enterprise incorporated as a private limited company in the United Kingdom with a for profit structure. We are not a charity and the membership is not a donation, it is the payment for a service that we provide.

Think of it in this way:
you pay a gardener to take care of a garden and you pay Mossy Earth to build a wild forest. Our job is to make sure our outcomes are as measurable as the gardener's work. A charity that shares their accounts simply shows you that they have spent money on. In this example if the charity was a gardener they would show you that they spent money on fuel for the lawnmower, fertilizer and soil but would not show you the actual outcomes. At Mossy Earth we aim to make the outcomes crystal clear and to make accounts reporting redundant. See the previous answer for how we achieve this.

Incorporating as a company was a deliberate decision that shapes the philosophy of our work. Here are the main reasons for why we chose this path:
  • We like to pay our taxes as a functional organisation that is a part of our society and a contributor to our shared progress.
  • We do not want to rely on large corporate donors and their profits because they bring with them unwelcome influence and pressure over decision making and could attempt to compromise our mission.
  • We focus on creating a service that stands as a long term sustainable revenue structure depending only on individuals to carry out our work.
  • The ability to compete and improve through the market forces us to create a superior service.
  • We believe it is important to showcase that nature and conservation are able to be considered an economically viable industry through the services sector.
  • Instead of relying on accounting as a performance evaluation tool we have the pressure to ensure outcomes are transparent and can be assessed by all our members.
  • We want to be open to potential capital investment as a means to grow Mossy Earth's impact.
  • In addition to this we are working on some additional measure we hope to launch in due time such as live-streaming planting, 360 degree photos and aerial imagery.
Our accounts are private and will remain private. We report everything required to ensure our impact is measurable.

How can I access the carbon calculator to estimate my footprint?

Transparency is paramount to us and we go to great lengths to ensure that you are able to evaluate our work:

Previously we worked with a simplified carbon footprint assessment to check whether you were covered by our membership to become carbon negative. Together with a PhD student we are now developing a more advanced calculator which will utilise the most recent research in the field. This will be released the 15th of September.

In the mean time, you can always book a call with us to chat over your carbon footprint.

Can I volunteer at Mossy Earth?

Almost all of our tree planting is done by professional tree planters. It is simply more efficient to do it this way and it also gives a small boost to the local economy around each project. Something we want to avoid.

How is my money spent?

Your money is spent on achieving the outcomes outlined on this page.

Every month we plant 2 trees and as well as the required buffer for that project (from 30% up to 200% depending on the project). We also save some cash as an insurance to fund the replanting over the next 3 to 10 years. Besides that every few months we spend money on a rewilding impact project which you will get to vote on and will receive a report on.

We also spend money paying tree planters, suppliers, our salaries, technology and marketing costs. These costs are for us to optimize and will not be disclosed. In the end what matters is not what percentage of the money goes to what, that is an irrelevant metric. What matters is the outcome achieve by each euro/pound/dollar. This is why we focus on making our results bullet proof and crystal clear. Everyone at Mossy Earth earns a living wage.

What happens if one of my trees dies?

We have a buffer of 30% extra trees. If the mortality rate exceeds that percentage then we will replant the necessary numbers. We look at mortality rates in batches of 1000 and never individual cases as we do not mark trees.
